Holding ponds to be upgraded to alleviate flash flood woes – Ku Nan

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories (FT) Ministry plans to increase the volume of the holding ponds in Kampung Berembang here to alleviate flash flood woes in the capital city.

Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said upgrading of the holding ponds to manage water from the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) would be implemented as preparation to accommodate heavy rains.

“The project, a joint effort between Kuala Lumpur City Hall ( DBKL) and the Drainage and Irrigation Department ( DID) is to ensure excess rainfall will not cause the ponds to overflow and result in flash floods.

“We also plan to build a flood retention pond for Sungai Bunus near the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia here and SMART 2 in an effort to contain the flood situation in nearby areas there,” he said.

He was commenting on the flash floods which occurred at several locations in the capital city Sunday, after launching a groundbreaking ceremony for the Residensi Rampai II FT affordable housing project ( Rumawip) at Taman Seri Rampai here yesterday.

Tengku Adnan said flash floods occurred in Masjid Jamek area yesterday evening due to the intensity of the rainfall which caused Sungai Bunus ( Sungai Gombak) and Sungai Klang to overflow.

He said it was unusual for flash floods to occur in the Masjid Jamek area and DID and DBKL would soon hold discussions to find a solution to the problem. — Bernama
