Nafiizwan in, Yuen out of British Squash Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Malaysian men’s squash players, Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan and Ivan Yuen, faced different fates in the first qualifying match of the British Open Squash Championsh­ips in England late Sunday ( Monday in Malaysia).

The top national player, Mohd Nafiizwan advanced to the final qualifying round by defeating Bradley Masters of England, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3 and 11- 4 in the match held at the University of Hull, according to the tournament website;www. britishope­nsquash.com.

He is slated to meet another England player, Adrian Waller who edged his compatriot Patrick Rooney, 11- 6, 8-11, 11- 3 and 11-2 in another first qualifying round encounter.

Yuen, however, was eliminated from the tournament although putting up a stiff resistance against French player, Gregoire Marche, losing in 11-9, 7-11, 11-7, 4-11 and 211. Malaysian squash queen, Datuk Nicol David who is a five- time British Open champion, will kick off her campaign against Olivia Blatchford of the United States in the opening round late Tuesday (Wednesday in Malaysia).

For the record, Nicol emerged victorious in the tournament in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2014. — Bernama
