Extra trip for Song-Kapit route this school holidays

SIBU: A total of 9,102 passengers passed through Sibu Express Terminal between March 16 and 19 with an extra trip approved for the Song- Kapit route to cater for the demand during the current school holidays.

From the figure, arrivals accounted for the bulk at 5,607 and 3,495 for departures.

The RC Pontoon at Kapit Wharf in Khoo Peng Loong Road handled 2,312 passengers during the same period. From the figure, arrivals and departures accounted for 1,279 and 1,033 respective­ly.

Sarawak Rivers Board ( SRB) assistant controller (region two) Christophe­r Chan said they were now having the first school term holiday operation from March 16 until 19 to keep overloadin­g at bay.

“River blocks are conducted to ensure passengers comply with the Sarawak Rivers Ordinance and regulation­s.

“For the period from March 16 to 19, a total of 9,102 passengers passed through the Sibu Passenger Terminal and 2,312 for the downstream terminal at Kapit Pontoon Wharf in Khoo Peng Loong Road here for journey to and from Daro, Igan, Bruit and Passin.

“One extra trip has been requested for the Song- Kapit route to cater for increasing demand,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Chan said the ‘ No Ticket, No Entry’ policy at terminals was enforced to ensure that operators did not overload their boats.

“One compound has been issued for overloadin­g. We hope they will always comply with the Ordinance for the safety of the passengers. We will not hesitate to take stringent action against them for any violations of the Ordinance.

“So far, they have been very cooperativ­e. We would also like to advise passengers not to overload boats and that operators must refrain from taking them in,” he said.
