KUCHING: The pace of progress within a community depends greatly on its cooperation with both governmental and nongovernmental bodies engaged in development.

In relation to this, Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said the ‘ Kejiranan Mesra’ ( Friendly Neighbourhood) concept was meant to uplift the quality and standard of living of a community.

“Apart from cooperating with the relevant agencies, the sharing of knowledge and experience between members of the community is also important when it comes to planning and executing the development programmes slated for the benefit of the community,” he said the closing of a workshop on ‘ Kejiranan Mesra’ here on Monday.

The Datuk Bandar’s text of speech was read by acting Kuching North City Commission ( DBKU) director Morshidi Ahmad.

Abang Wahap further said DBKU would like to see the communities under its jurisdiction to be competitive and able to move forward in every aspect.

Meanwhile the three- day workshop gathered 50 participants from five state constituencies under DBKU’s jurisdiction – Pantai Damai, Demak Laut, Tupong, Samariang and Satok.

On this workshop, Abang Wahap expressed his confidence that the plans presented throughout the three days could be put into motion as part of DBKU’s Agenda 2017.

On another subject, the Datuk Bandar also disclosed that the commission – over the course of 28 years in managing Kuching North areas – had been carrying out many development initiatives such as the widely-publicised ‘Clean, Beautiful and Safe’ (CBS) campaign which was launched in 2013.

DBKU, Abang Wahap added, had also teamed up with nongovernmental organisations to undertake volunteerism and welfare activities involving youths.

“Such activities have brought us ( DBKU) closer to the people in our community,” he said.

Apart from cooperating with the relevant agencies, the sharing of knowledge and experience between members of the community is also important when it comes to planning and executing the development programmes slated for the benefit of the community.
