Final INIR mission phase 1 report to be tabled in cabinet soon — Nancy

KUALA LUMPUR: The final report of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review ( INIR) Mission Phase 1 will be tabled in the cabinet soon to find out whether it could be made public or not, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

“I need to table it because of time constraint. But there’s nothing much, it’s just a matter of asking the cabinet whether we should make the report public or not,” she told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur heat of the FameLab Malaysia 2017 ( FameLab) competition held here yesterday.

The three- phase assessment, initiated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, concluded that Malaysia is thoroughly prepared and has developed a considerable base of knowledge to make an informed decision about introducing nuclear power.

On March 7, the minister said Malaysia has 30 days to respond to the recommendation made by the report that evaluates interested newcomer countries’ status and state- of- readiness in developing nuclear power programmes.

Also present at the FameLab event was Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology ( MIGHT) president and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman and Petrosains chief executive officer Dr Tengku Nasariah Tengku Syed Ibrahim.

FameLab was a collaboration between MIGHT and British Council Malaysia and the competition was aimed at finding new voices in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The science communication competition required its participants to engage and entertain audiences with a threeminute presentation on their chosen STEM concept.

Thirty- two participants competed in the Kuala Lumpur heat and presented various topics such as biotechnology, electricity and data technology.

They were judged based on three main criteria: content, clarity and charisma.

Previously, two heats were held in Johor Bahru and Kuching on March 11 and March 18, respectively.

Winners of the three heats and seven other FameLab finalists will attend a weekend Communication Masterclass before competing in the FameLab National Final on May 6.

The national winner would receive a RM3,000 cash prize and will represent Malaysia to compete against 30 other contestants from around the world at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival, United Kingdom in June. — Bernama
