Century Ride starring Azmi, Fong, Charles, June

MIRI: Brunei national cyclist Azmi Mohammad Luqman Abd Hazid won the King of Mountain award in the Miri Internatio­nal Century Ride 2017 yesterday.

Azmi won the top award at the Tanjung Lobang Hill climb along the 120- km road route when he won the Men’s Elite Open challenge with a time of 2hrs 35mins17se­cs. Another special t it le of Bukit Song Sprintking went to Maximillia­n Fong Hung Chiat of Kuching. Fong also won the Men’s Junior category.

Gathering momentum for the reputation of Kuching cyclists on the adventurou­s trail, Charles Kun Diking of Kuching emerged champion of the Mountainbi­ke category, again followed by two Bruneians Muhammad Al Wale Aini and Imanizayid­i Yunaidi.

In Men’s Elite Open, second was Juka Gerstner of South Africa and Abdul Hadrie Morsidi of Brunei, third.

In the Men’s Junior, two Miri cyclists Ivan Ong Chung Wee and Steven Sia Cheng Siong were second and third respective­ly. Another Bruneian Mohd Halid Sata won the Men’s Veteran, followed by Michael Scheck of Germany and Riang Moksin of Miri, third.

The Men’s Master category saw Miri’s Ling Koh Chiong emerging first, followed by two Bruneians Teo Kock Hwee (second) and Jaap Erik Can Krimpen (third).

Sabah cyclist June Fan emerged champion in the Ladies’ Open, followed by Kuching duo Myrtle Patricia Wilken (second) and Faizatul Yuyue Ahmad Joyo (second-runner up).

Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin was guest of honour to present the prizes to the top three winners in all categories with cash of RM1,000 ( champion), RM500 ( second) and RM300 (third) plus trophy. Seven consolatio­n winners in each category received RM50 each.

Some 400 cyclists from various representa­tives took part in the race which organised by Masterpiec­e Cycling Club of Miri and Specialize­d Miri. The internatio­nal cycling event was supported by Ministry of Tourism Sarawak, Miri City Council, Fire and Rescue Services Department ( Bomba), Royal Malaysia Police Force and Cycling Associatio­n of Sarawak.

Also present was the chairman of Miri City Council ( MCC)’s tourism developmen­t standing committee counci lor Ernest Goh.
