Dr Annuar calls on SMC to walk the talk to deliver more infrastructure devt

SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) can play a key role in fulfilling the people’s desire to see more infrastructure development being implemented here.

In making this suggestion, Assistant Minister of Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee said this in turn would improve the overall welfare of the people besides showing that SMC really walks the talk.

“Sibu will be an important gateway to the central zone and therefore people say that it must be given plenty of funds for development.

“I know there are people putting up all sorts of master plans and talking about the digital economy the chief minister is talking about.

“Please do something to make this happen. Not just political talk or just something that you want to promise to the people,” he said when officiating at the opening ceremony of the SMC Social and Recreational Club meeting on Sunday.

Dr Annuar, who is Nangka assemblyman, said Sibu was booming 20 to 30 years ago because of timber.

“Now, the town is a bit slow in terms of growth while Miri and Bintulu are catching up,” he noted, adding that this was where SMC could play an important role to bring back the confidence of the people.

“I believed the people will cooperate with SMC for this purpose. That is why I always tell SMC councillors from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) that the council’s core business is infrastructure and wellbeing of the people.

“I hope wellbeing will not just include good roads, good drainage and housing but we should also bear in mind the urban poor among us.

“We should help these people (urban poor) so we can grow together in this town,” he said.

At the function Dr Annuar announced a RM10,000 grant for the club and distributed study incentives to club members’ children.

Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee, SMC deputy chairman Rogayah Jemain and club chairman Abang Ahmad Zaini were among those present.
