Brunei’s Ivy League to debut at Children’s Charity Netball Open

MIRI: A Children’s Charity Netball Open Tournament 2017 will be held at Kelab Rekreasi Petrolium ( KRP) Lutong this Sunday, with a field of 36 teams and a debut appearance from Ivy League of Brunei.

According to project director Aainaa Ayuma Derani, the teams conf irmed are from Brunei, Bintulu, Kuching and Miri, while the tournament will also have colourful activities geared for children and women. “Apart from healthy competion, the organisers intend to raise funds for charities here, “Aainaa said yesterday.

She said 28 women and eight mixed teams from Brunei , Bintulu, Kuching and Miri will be taking part in the one- day competitio­n — the first sport event jointly organised by Sarawak Sports Council, Sarawak Netball Associatio­n, Pheonix Netball Club, Miri Hospital and KRP.

She disclosed that Ivy League — helmed by daughter of the Sultan of Brunei — will be playing in the women’s and mixed team events.

Aainaa said this would be the first outing for Ivy League, one of the top teams in Brunei, in a netball tournament in Sarawak and will pose a stiff challenge.

She said a total of RM3,000 in prize- money will be given to the winning teams, including discount coupons and certificat­es of participat­ion.

Apart from netball, there will be a demonstrat­ion of women’s martial art for sel f- defence by Warmonger Gym, cultural performanc­es by Institute Latihan Perindustr­ial ( ILP) students, a Sedidik pupils performanc­e, colouring competitio­n and freeflow isotonic 100- Plus and milo drinks, she disclosed.

She said Assistant Minister of Welfare and Community Wellbeing Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail is expected to officiate at the closing ceremony of the tournament while MSN Zone Miri assistant director Harifen Mansor and Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong will be present for the prize- giving.
