Miri grab early lead in MSS S’wak 2017

KUCHING: Three records were created as Miri grabbed the early lead on the first day of the 45th Sarawak Schools Sports Council ( MSS Sarawak) Track and Field Championsh­ip at the Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya yesterday.

The first record of the day was broken by Bellinda Jane Peter of Sibu who cleared a height of 1.52m to win the Girls Under-14 high jump, thus erasing the previous record of 1.51m set by Annie Ng Mei Yen of Kuching three years ago.

This was followed by Sarikei thrower Wong Yu Kiong who hurled the discus to a new distance of 48.90m in the Boys U14 category.

The old record of 45.50m was set by Yong Sie Liang of Miri last year.

However, the most impressive record breaker was Miri’s Ng Jing Xuan who shattered the 12-yearrecord of 32.09m held by Rosmi Yusia also of Miri in the Girls U14 javelin with a new distance of 32.31m.

Miri, who sent the second largest contingent of 157 athletes to the meet, captured eight gold, eight silver and six bronze medals to collect 116.6 points and lead the chase for the championsh­ip title.

In a close second are Kuching who bagged 7-5-5 ( 92.5 points) while Sarikei was in third place with 66 points from 5- 5- 3. Fifty-five events were competed yesterday and the competitio­n resumes today with 63 more events. Organised by MSS Sarawak and hosted by Kuching District Education Office, the meet attracted 1,003 athletes from 12 divisions. The championsh­ip will select the best athletes to represent Sarawak at the Malaysian Schools Sports Counci l ( MSSM) Track and Field Championsh­ip in Penang from April 24-29.
