Database needed to facilitate devt efforts for Kayan — Rep
MIRI: In all the efforts and matters pertaining to the need and development of minority ethnic groups like the Kayan, a solid database and evidence of their presence and contribution to Miri is needed, says Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.
Therefore, it is important for a census on the community living in the city to be done, he said, urging all Kayans residing in Miri city to support and participate in a census.
Dennis earlier attended a briefing for officers and agents in the exercise. The Miri branch of the Sarawak Kayan Association is conducting the census from April 1 to May 30.
“The only purpose of the census is to obtain data on the Kayan community living in Miri city. Permission has been obtained from the Miri District Office and therefore I can assure the community that there is no hidden or other motive in the exercise but for the benefit of the Kayan community,” Dennis said.
He also gave his assurance that the exercise will be conducted in a transparent manner.
According to Dennis, other communities such as the Kenyah and other Orang Ulu groups in Miri will also follow suite to do similar censuses.
On the other note, the assemblyman has brought up to the state government the need to have an additional penghulu in Apoh and central Baram areas to better serve the people.
