Liquor worth over RM23,000 seized, four suspects caught

Police here foiled an attempt to smuggle liquor worth RM23,760 with the arrest of four individual­s at Mile 8, Kubong Road on Tuesday night.

A man and his wife were among those who were arrested in the 10.45pm operation, with the seizure of 198 boxes of liquor worth RM23,760.

Limbang District deputy police chief DSP Tega Bilong said, based on public tip off, a team of police personnel from the Criminal Investigat­ion Department (CID) conducted the operation on two pick-up trucks in the area.

“We managed to confiscate 198 boxes of liquor worth RM23,760.

Also seized were two pick-up valued at RM160,000 used to transport the commodity,” he told a news conference at police headquarte­rs here yesterday, which saw the presence of the CID chief, ASP Roslan Leman.

Tega added the four suspects, believed to be labourers of an estate, did not have any criminal record and were tested negative of drugs.

He said the suspects used timber roads from Miri, Long Lama, Long Seridan and up to Long Balau and Long Napir, which are far from human settlement, to bring in the smuggled liquor.

He said the liquor from Miri were meant for customers in Limbang.

The case will be handed over to the Customs Department for investigat­ion under Section 135 (1) (a) of the Customs Act 1967.

Te ga, meanwhile, urged the public to continue giving informatio­n on any suspected smuggling activity and crime in their respective areas to the police.

“We will continue to monitor and we will not hesitate to arrest the smugglers,” he added.
