Library to hold fourth Sarawakiana Carnival from May 5-7
MIRI: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak here will have its fourth Sarawakiana Carnival from May 5 - 7 to create greater awareness and promote the cultures and heritage of Sarawak.
This year’s event is organised in collaboration with Miri City Council ( MCC) to commemorate Miri City’s 12th anniversary and Miri May Fest 2017.
The three- day carnival will start at 8am and will be held in and around the library’s compound.
Among the many activities to be held are an exhibition on ‘Memories of Miri City’, exhibition and sale of Sarawak handicrafts, workshop on making traditional delicacies: ‘celorot’ and ‘serabai’, Baram ‘sape’ master demonstration, oral history, Tekna’ singing and traditional ethnic food cooking demonstration.
There will also be competitions on ‘ bermukun’ ( Sarawak Malay metrical verses and lively dance), Kayan Tekna’ traditional singing, games and sports of yesteryears, youth traditional talent time as well as Sarawak traditional cooking and dish arrangements.
Throughout the carnival, there will be food, product and services booths featuring 20 cottage industry entrepreneurs.
Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang is scheduled to officiate at the opening of the carnival at 7.30pm on May 6 when the final of the ‘bermukun’ competition is held.
Members of the public are invited to the carnival. Admission is free.
The first Sarawakiana Carnival here was held six years ago in 2011 and its activities attracted some 3,000 visitors while last year’s event attracted more than 4,000 visitors from all over Miri, Bintulu, Limbang, Lawas, Labuan and Brunei.
