Library to hold fourth Sarawakian­a Carnival from May 5-7

MIRI: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak here will have its fourth Sarawakian­a Carnival from May 5 - 7 to create greater awareness and promote the cultures and heritage of Sarawak.

This year’s event is organised in collaborat­ion with Miri City Council ( MCC) to commemorat­e Miri City’s 12th anniversar­y and Miri May Fest 2017.

The three- day carnival will start at 8am and will be held in and around the library’s compound.

Among the many activities to be held are an exhibition on ‘Memories of Miri City’, exhibition and sale of Sarawak handicraft­s, workshop on making traditiona­l delicacies: ‘celorot’ and ‘serabai’, Baram ‘sape’ master demonstrat­ion, oral history, Tekna’ singing and traditiona­l ethnic food cooking demonstrat­ion.

There will also be competitio­ns on ‘ bermukun’ ( Sarawak Malay metrical verses and lively dance), Kayan Tekna’ traditiona­l singing, games and sports of yesteryear­s, youth traditiona­l talent time as well as Sarawak traditiona­l cooking and dish arrangemen­ts.

Throughout the carnival, there will be food, product and services booths featuring 20 cottage industry entreprene­urs.

Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang is scheduled to officiate at the opening of the carnival at 7.30pm on May 6 when the final of the ‘bermukun’ competitio­n is held.

Members of the public are invited to the carnival. Admission is free.

The first Sarawakian­a Carnival here was held six years ago in 2011 and its activities attracted some 3,000 visitors while last year’s event attracted more than 4,000 visitors from all over Miri, Bintulu, Limbang, Lawas, Labuan and Brunei.
