Socso starts Ops Kesan after grace period ends

SIBU: Ninety-four employers here have made good of the grace period for the whole month of March to register with Social Security Organisation ( Socso) to avoid facing the music.

Socso state director Philip Sangkan said during the monthlong ‘Ops Kesan’, any employer found not registered would be compounded.

“We believe there are still many employers who are eligible to be registered but don’t comply with the Act ( Employees’ Social Security Act 1969) despite the onemonth grace period extended. We have given the whole of March (for them) to register.

“So, starting from this month, we will issue compound notices to defiant employers immediately. The compound depends on the severity of the offence— between RM500 and RM4,000 (maximum) per offence.

“Our intention is not to punish employers but to educate them on the importance of complying with Section 4 and 5 of the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969,” Philip told reporters after officiating at the launching of ‘Ops Kesan 2017’ for Sibu here yesterday.

The exercise started yesterday and will end in a month’s time.

“We are going for door-to- door detection and Sibu ( Socso) has identified certain areas for the operation,” he added.

On entertainment outlets, he said: “It does not matter whether they are entertainment outlets or not. As long as we detect they are eligible but yet to do so (register), compounds will be issued.”

Sibu branch manager Tan Phang Chia, on the other hand, said he believed there was a channel for them to reach out to these business outlets.

Tan said they could write to their respective association to get its members to register with Socso.

Earlier, Philip said starting from June 1, every Malaysian worker must register with Socso.

Meanwhile, there are three teams tasked with detection here, with each team comprising about four personnel.

The team leaders are Robinson Jellie, Nizam Ramli and Debra Albert.

Also present at the launching ceremony was Socso Sibu deputy branch manager Jimmy Hendrick Kijan.
