MCC, SDC work out ways to attract tourists

-

MIRI: Miri City Council will work closely with Subis District Council ( SDC) to develop the local tourism industry to attract more tourists to come to the two places.

During a tourism development dialogue with SDC on Thursday, MCC mayor Adam Yii said the collaboration would focus on two main objectives; to identify tourism spots in Miri and Subis districts; and secondly, to identify sanitary landfills and solid waste dumps in the two districts.

“Tackling these issues is vital to maintain Miri’s reputation as a clean and liveable city capable of attracting more tourists,” Yii said in a press statement received here yesterday.

The dialogue, which was also attended by deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, secretary Morshidi Fredrick, secretary of Subis District Council Lolita Jaime Nicholas, chairman of Subis Tourism Committee Councillor Boniface Bada and councillors from both councils, also touched on several issues to promote tourist attractions in the two areas.

Tourism promotional programme, according to the meeting, to disseminate information to tourists must be more effective especially at airport, Tourism Information Centre (in city centre) and publicity through posters, and etc.

The development and active promotion of Tusan Beach which comes under Miri City Council, and turning longhouses in Miri and Subis as tourist attractions are also in the pipeline.

“Another attraction, the Kelulut Honey Farm near Bekenu, can open its doors to tourists to allow them to experience the harvesting of Kelulut honey,” added the press statement.

The presence of more food outlets is also part of the project, as they are most likely frequented by locals and tourists alike.

Yii added that the two councils would hold quarterly meetings with the tourism industry players and other agencies to see if more could be done to attract tourists to the division.
