MIRI: This year’s Gawai Dayak Bazaar will be part of the Miri May Fest as well as Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture tourism calendar.

It will be held at the Emart Riam carpark on May 6-21 from 3pm to 11.30pm daily.

The annual bazaar in its third year is organised by Persatuan Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak (GADS) in collaboration with Emart Riam.

GADS president Vicky Gulin Shandom said there will be 60 trading lots for Dayak cuisine, handicrafts, souvenirs, and traditional attire, as well as booths for an automobile exhibition.

“Throughout the 16- day bazaar, there will also be various side activities and programmes to enliven the bazaar. The bazaar’s launching ceremony is scheduled on May 6 and Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri (Datuk Amar) Dr James Jemut Masing is expected to officiate at the ceremony,” he said.

“The highlight of the event will be the Gawai Dayak Parade on May 20, which will take place from 2pm and will be followed by the closing ceremony.”

Other side activities are Zumba, Kebaya Queen contest, children’s Kumang Gawai competition, GDB 2017 Idols, Sape Festival, ngajat competition for adults and children, children’s colouring contest, and Band Fest.

“We have also invited popular local artistes to perform at the bazaar almost every night, throughout the period,” said Vicky.

Priority for stall rental will be given to association members.

“However, those who have yet to register as GADS members are still welcome to participate in the bazaar, and take this opportunity to venture into business and generate extra income,” he said.
