Outstandin­g students rewarded with excellence award

MIRI: A total of 20 former pupils of SK St Joseph here who scored outstandin­g result in their UPSR examinatio­n last year received excellence awards at a special high-tea held in Dynasty Hotel here yesterday.

The ceremony was jointly organised by the management of SK St Joseph and its Parents Teachers Associatio­n (PTA) in collaborat­ion with SK St Joseph Miri Alumni and SK St Joseph Miri School Board.

Assistant Minister for Tourism, Datuk Lee Kim Shin who officiated at the event, praised the students for their effort and hard work.

He also praised their parents for being supportive in their children’s education, saying such commitment played vital roles in their children’s success.

“Many parents give gadget like smartphone or tablet to their children and let them use the technology without supervisio­n. Actually, these gadgets are a good thing but there should be limit to its usage.

“It is the parent’s responsibi­lity to ensure that their children use these technology appropriat­ely, including to study. The kids can also play games on their smartphone or tablets as long as there is limit to that,” he said.

At the function, Lee announced a RM10,000 allocation to help the school build a roofed walkway for its students.

“I was told the whole project is estimated at more than RM300,000. As this is a big project, the school should request for funding from the federal government,” he said adding the project would definitely benefit the students especially during the rainy season.

Also present at the event were Councillor Aries Leong representi­ng Piasau assemblyma­n Dato Sebastian Ting, SUPP Senadin publicity chief Eric Chin and SK St Joseph PTA chairman Goh Ser Seng.

Meanwhile, of the 20 recipients of the awards, five obtained 6As, eight obtained 5As and seven obtained 4As in their UPSR 2016.

The 6As students are Daniel Tengaling James Harry, Ellisa Ee Jia Xin, Gabriel Arnold John, Izzat Izzudin Zaidi and Max Hii Wo Jing.

Those scoring 5As were Ambrose Chan Chee Sang, Aniessa Elliana Sunny, Bradley Joseph Jorek, Deanne Emu Laurence, Emmaanuel Elm Eulogius, Muhammad Nur Sharmaine Suherrto, Vanessa Basil and Rueben Thiyaga Rajan.

Award recipients with 4As were Adrianna Awing Muhammad Taufiq, Felicia Urey Anyie, Kimberly Ruly Andrew, Larry Juby Liap, Mark Aldrich Vincent Buyun, Mohamad Ajie Fikri Ramli and Angelina Hasnah.
