RM88,150 up for grabs at international RC power boat race this April 28-30

-

SIBU: A whopping RM88,150 in cash prizes are up for grabs in the Borneo International Remote Control (RC) Power Boat Tournament, to take place at Permai Lake Garden here on April 28 to 30.

So far, the event – held in conjunction with the Visit Sibu Year (VSY) 2017 campaign – has attracted a record of 160 participants.

According to Sibu Remote Control Sports Club secretary Robert Angkah, this year’s tournament has smashed the record by offering the biggest prize money and having most number of racers.

‘I believe this is the biggest prize money ever dangled out, as well as the highest number of participants for any RC power boat tournament in the country. This is indeed a historic, recordbreaking feat for Sibu.

“The prize money is up for grabs in seven categories and one team event. The tournament will involve about 600 boats – on average, a racer will have three boats,” he told thesundaypost, pointing out Sibu Remote Control Sports Club as one of the main organisers.

Robert later disclosed that apart from local racers, there would also be those coming from Peninsular Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand and the Middle East.

“However, registration for the tournament is now closed,” he added.

The winner of each category will walk away with RM5,000 and a trophy, while the respective first to fourth runners-up will receive RM3,000, RM1,500, RM800 and RM400. Those placed sixth to tenth will each be given RM150.

“The team champion will lift the VSY 2017 Team Challenge Tournament Cup, together with RM8,000 plus a trophy,” said Robert.

According to him, the main objective of the tournament is to attract more visitors to this riverine town.

‘We hope the participants would have a pleasant stay here and, in turn, would encourage their families and friends back home to visit Sibu in the future,” he said, adding that the tournament is also aimed at promoting the RC boat game to the local public.
