KUCHING: The Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) will be getting more support from the State government in its efforts to further promote rugby and bid to revive its glory days.

“I will try my very very best in my capacity as the state secretary to help make rugby an important game and that it gets support from the schools,” said State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani in his opening speech for the Song Kheng Hai Memorial Cup Sevens rugby tournament at Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field yesterday.

Saying that since the enthusiastic and very committed Richard Song Swee Jin took over the presidency of SRU, he had seen a hike in the interest and enthusiasm of rugby players to make rugby “the game” again.

Morshidi, who is also the SRU patron, said the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field should really be kept as part of the city’s green.

“I will try to help to make the Song Kheng Rugby Field a better place to play in,” he added.

He also wants to be part of the team to develop rugby further and make Sarawak the number one team at the Malaysian Open.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor and organising chairman Richard Song.
