KUCHING: A farmer was sentenced to two years in prison by the Sessions Court here yesterday for committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder of his friend 17 years ago.

The accused, Gediros Ayot, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code, before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.

In passing the sentence, the judge said she took into consideration the nature of offence, public interest as well as Gediros’ mitigation.

Among others, she said the accused had saved the court’s time and cost and also noted that the incident happened 17 years ago but he was only charged recently.

Gediros, 53, said he was the sole breadwinner for his family while his wife was very sick.

He also appealed to serve the custodial sentence at Sri Aman Prison so that he could be nearer to his family, which was granted by the court.

He admitted to have caused the death of Suni Aji about 8pm on June 27, 1999 behind a fish stall at Kota Sentosa here.

DPP Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid told the court that the accused and six other friends were drinking and a fight broke out following a misunderstanding.

He said the accused had hit Suni with a wooden object and left him at the scene laying unconscious in a pool of blood.

The incident was witnessed by their friends while the accused just walked away from the scene.

On Dec 19 last year, the accused was arrested by the police at a primary school in Sri Aman.
