We need more accountants in Sarawak to help with the growing number of businesses in the state. There is a huge demand for accountants in Sarawak.

KUCHING: Sarawak looks set to have its own professional accounting centre soon.

Borneo Development Corporation chairman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie told reporters yesterday the idea came about following the set up of the national accounting centre recently.

He hopes that after setting up Sarawak’s very own professional accounting centre, more Sarawakians would become qualified accountants.

“We need more accountants in Sarawak to help with the growing number of businesses in the state. There is a huge demand for accountants in Sarawak,” he added.

As a trained accountant himself, he will do all he can to lend a helping hand to realise the idea of setting up the state’s fi rst

professional accounting centre soon.

So far Nansian has identified Kolej Sunway Kuching as a suitable institution to be turned into a professional accounting centre.

“Kolej Sunway is well known for producing quality accounting students and graduates in East Malaysia. I am sure that with some help, the institution will become a professional accounting centre for the state,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also remarked that he is looking to produce more Bumiputera accountants in the future as he believed the Bumiputera can have a bright future should they take up accountancy or finance as a career.

Bumiputera only make up three per cent of the number of accountants practising in Sarawak.

Earlier, Nansian witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) between Kolej Sunway Kuching and Kaplan Higher Education Academy, Singapore held at the Kolej Sunway campus here.

The MoU was signed as both institutions have agreed to work with each other in the areas of accountancy.

Kolej Sunway Kuching has achieved wide acclaim as a leading centre for accountancy and business studies in East Malaysia.

The institution is also the fi rst and only tuition provider in East Malaysia to be awarded Platinum Approved Learning Partner status by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 2010.
