SMK Matang Jaya dominates inter-school kabaddi

KUCHING: SMK Matang Jaya dominated the Kuching InterSchoo­l Kabaddi Invitation­al Tournament for the second consecutiv­e time at the school field yesterday when they won two out of the four categories competed in the two- day competitio­n.

The host were the Boys U18, U15 and Girls U18, U15 champions in the tournament that was last held in 2015.

This year, only SMK Tunaz provided the biggest challenge to SMK Matang Jaya when they produced a one-two finish in the Boys U15 category where the final saw Tunaz A beating Tunaz B 5828.

SMK Matang Jaya settled for the third spot.

SMK Tunaz also lifted the Boys U18 crown while SMK Matang Jaya were second and in joint third place were SMK Tunaz B and SMK Seni.

In the Girls U18, SMK Matang Jaya B topped the five-team league by beating SMK Seni 28-21, SMK Green Road 24-10, SMK St Teresa 26- 24 and SMK Matang Jaya A 30-12.

Second and third placings were occupied by SMK Matang Jaya A and SMK Seni.

The Boys U15 competitio­n saw SMK Tunaz A, SMK Tunaz B and SMK Matang Jaya ending up in the top three spots while SMK Matang Jaya emerged the champions and first runners-up in the Girls U15 category.

SMK Matang Jaya earned more honours when Ismi Hanif Haikal Ishak was named the best players in the Boys U15, Hijratul Ayudia Aden in the Girls U15 player and Sharifah Nur Syahfiqah Wan Hamdon in the Girls U18.

Whereas the Best Boys U18 player was Brandy Fisa Zena from SMK Seni.

The tournament is joint ly organised by the Sarawak Kabaddi Associatio­n and SMK Matang Jaya with the objective of unearthing new talents and selecting players to represent Sarawak in the National U19 championsh­ip in Perak from May 19 to 21.

Among those present at the closing ceremony were Morshidi Said, pol itical secretary to Works Mini s ter Dat o Sr i Fadillah Yusof, Morshidi Said Zul from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Solidarity, Sarawak Kabaddi Associatio­n president Ramachandr­an Ramasamy and SMK Matang Jaya principal Zakiah Abdul Hamid.
