KUCHING: Environmental awareness education should be introduced at pre- school levels to help form groups of pupils who are sensitive to environmental protection and conservation.
What the children learn in school, they will be able to remember and they will spread the message to their parents or guardians or even to their siblings at home. Azuri Azizah Saedon, State Department of Environment (DOE) director
State Department of Environment ( DOE) director Azuri Azizah Saedon said children exposed to environmental conservation early can influence their elders.
“What the children learn in school, they will be able to remember and they will spread the message to their parents or guardians or even to their siblings at home,” she said the launch of the Environment Awareness Programme for pre-school pupils at Kampung Bunuk community hall here yesterday.
Azuri urged parents and guardians to also play a role in inculcating awareness of preserving the environment among their children from early childhood.
“Parents and guardians should try to show some good examples of how to love nature and environment to the young children at home.
She noted that some of the good practices of loving nature that parents could show to their young children are saving energy and water, recycling and disposing of rubbish responsibly.
On the programme, she said it was jointly organised by DOE and Trienekens ( Sarawak) Sdn Bhd in conjunction with Earth Day 2017.
She said the awareness on environment programme for preschool consists of five modules touching on water, animals, plants, air and recycling.
Each module comes with guidelines for educators to carry out activities.
