MIRI: Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society ( SCCS) ‘Go Bald’ fundraising campaign is on its ninth year since it was launched in 2008.

Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, its president Jocelyn Hee said this year they had targeted to raise RM1 million with a total of 1,500 head shaves in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

“Last year, we successfully raised over RM775,000 with total of 600 heads shaved through the campaign. Despite the slow economy, we are keeping our hopes high to be able to reach this target, and more importantly, to get support from members of the public,” she said.

Hee recalled that SCCS started the public shave about eight years ago, to raise awareness, funds and support for families and children battling childhood cancer.

“For many cancer patients, especially children, hair loss following chemotherapy is one of the most distressing aspects of

“Whilst this is the least of the effects of cancer treatment, it can be traumatic nonetheless. The act of going bald by members of the public shows young patients that it is ok for them to lose their hair, as they walk the path towards recovery.”

The main event for ‘Go Bald 9’ will kick off at CityONE Megamall in Kuching on July 9, followed by Miri on July 23, Sibu and Bintulu also in July.

“Beginning from this weekend onwards (April 22 and 23), we will have SCCS Go Bald booth at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall ( PCIM) and it will be going on every weekend right up to the event day, to give more exposure to members of the public about our campaign and childhood cancer,” said Hee.

For pledge card, participants can register at Somerset Hotel reception counter (10am– 8pm daily) or at the roadshow at PCIM.
