MP questions plan to move SRDC office back to Sibu Jaya

-

SIBU: The plan to move Sibu Rural District Council ( SRDC) administrative centre from Sanyan Building in the town centre to Sibu Jaya Township is raising questions here.

Sibu MP Oscar Ling yesterday said he found the proposal perplexing as SRDC closed its office in Sibu Jaya to move to its present office 10 years ago.

“And now, it plans to site its administrative centre in Sibu Jaya for reason of serving the Sibu Jaya residents better,” he said.

He said any move that would benefit Sibu Jaya should be welcomed with open arms, but using tax-payers’ money to build a new office space when it already has one is puzzling.

He said SRDC still has two units of a four- storey shop house

in Sibu Jaya which it used as its office from 2001 until 10 years ago and the has been left unoccupied since then.

He suggested that the council maintain its current office in the town centre.

He agreed that SRDC covers a vast area – from Bawang Assan to Selangau – but said SRDC should not overlook the possibility of Selangau having its own local council and Sibu Jaya coming under Sibu Municipal Council in the near future.

“Even in Bawang Assan area, there is a possibility a new and bigger township will be planned. If that is the case, will SRDC have to move its administrative office again,” he asked.

Meanwhile, Ling said he was disappointed with SRDC deputy chairman Robert Lau and his predecessor Clarence Ting for not answering his questions directly.

“My questions were why SRDC bought the premises in Wisma Sanyan in the first place and how much SRDC paid for the two-floor premises,” he said.
