Accreditation of China’s top 10 medical schools sought
SIBU: Sibu United Chinese Association ( UCA) hits out at Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam for what it views as the absence of proactive action to commence the accreditation of the top 10 medical schools in China.
UCA Sibu president Kong Hian Khim said they had been waiting for more than five years for the minister to take action.
“We hereby urge the minister to commence the accreditation of the top 10 medical schools in China,” he told a press conference here yesterday morning.
According to him, UCA has a special unit tasked with the responsibility of pushing for the accreditation of the top 10 medical schools in China.
He said the unit had written to the Health Ministry over the matter in 2013.
“Last year, we met with MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to seek his advice and assistance.
“An understanding was reached and the minister ( Liow) said he would consult the prime minister.
“Not long after that, we received a reply from Liow who confirmed that the prime minister was very concerned about the matter and had directed the Ministry of Health to

conduct the accreditation process with immediate effect.
“However, till today, the ministry has not commenced the accreditation process,” Kong lamented.
He suggested that the Health Minister should proactively and expeditiously instruct the Malaysian Medical Council to commence the accreditation as the prime minister had already given his blessing and fullest support.
According to Kong, there are over 100 medical graduates from China currently working in Malaysian hospitals.
“Before 2012, medical graduates from universities in China had to sit for the Medical Qualifying Examinations ( MQE).
“Since 2013, medical graduates from Shanghai Jiaotong Medical School and Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University have been exempted from sitting for the MQE,” Kong said.
