SIBU: Sibu Water Board ( SWB) will hold its ‘ Open Day’ cum ‘Clients Day’ at its Salim premises this Saturday (April 22), as part of the ‘World Water Day’ activities.

SWB general manager Sudin Jaya said the event – running from 9am to 4pm – would be a time for members of the public to see for themselves the steps involved in processing water for it to be safe for consumption.

He said there would also be other activities like video shows and compeitition, counter service, lucky draws, quiz, ‘ Guess the Water Volume in Container’ game, sales of food and drinks, an exhibition on piping products, and a children’s colouring contest.

“There are also programmes slated for creating awareness of the importance of water as a valuable resource and the public responsibility in safeguarding water against wastage.

“The World Day falls on March 22, but SWB is rolling out activities for the people, especially students, between April 22 and October. The SWB Appreciation Night will be in October,” he told reporters at a press conference on the event here yesterday.

The short video competition themed ‘Water and Waste Water’’ is open to secondary school students and members of the public, offering cash prize of RM1,000 and a certificate to the winner of each category.

“The video should highlight the need to reduce, reuse and replenish wastewater as a valuable resource. Each video will be judged on originality, creativity, clarity, style and evidence of serious research effort,” said SWB corporate and customer service manager Ariffin Kahar.

The English essay-writing competition for school students – primary and secondary – as well as for members of the public is also under the list of programmes.

The designated topic for primary school students is ‘ The Importance of Water’, while the secondary school students should write on the topic of ‘Save Water for Future’.

For members of the public, the topic is ‘Water and Waste Water’.

The prizes for primary school students are RM100 for the winner, RM75 for first runner-up, and RM50 for second runner-up, while those for secondary school students are RM150 (winner), RM120 (first runner-up) and RM80 (second runner-up).
