MIRI: The Sarawak Kenyah National Association ( PKKS) is conducting a survey together with the Miri District Office on the number of community members here.

Baram MP Anyi Ngau said this is necessary to establish whether there is a need to appoint a Kenyah community leader for the city.

“We’ve never known the exact number of Kenyahs in Miri. That is why this survey is important not just to know the figures, but also to identify their source of economy or their jobs in the city,” he said when handing over survey forms to over 30 Kenyah community representatives on Monday.

“This would give us an idea on mapping plans to help them in terms of economic needs.”

Anyi noted that most Orang Ulu living here do not know where to turn to when they face problems that require the help of community leaders.

Meanwhile, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said

the Sarawak Kayan Association ( PKS) also started a survey on the community here last month.

He called on the other seven ethnic groups under the umbrella of the Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia ( Forum) to carry out similar surveys if they wished to have a community leader appointed here.

“This is a genuine and honest effort by both associations who are collaborating with the district office for the betterment of their communities living permanently in Miri,” said Dennis, who is also PKS president.

Anyi and Dennis called on all members of the Kenyah and Kayan communities for their full support and commitment to help ensure community leaders are appointed here.

The PKKS survey will be conducted until the end of next month.
