128 trainees enrol for TVET programme at PPKS
KUCHING: Sarawak Skills Development Centre ( PPKS) welcomed a total of 128 trainee skills workers at its Tabuan Jaya main campus on April 10 for its fi rst series of 2017 intakes.
Prior to joining the Technical Vocational Education and Training ( TVET) programme at PPKS, the new intake comprises school leavers of PT3 and SPM from throughout Sarawak region.
They are registered for the Malaysian Skills Certificate at level 2 and 3 with various technical programmes offered in Plantation Management, AirConditioning, Graphic Design, Electrical, Industrial Electronic, Mechatronics, Information System, Mechanical Draughtsman and Fashion and Tailoring.
The trainees recently took part in an orientation programme to prepare them for the vocational training. The programme was officiated by PPKS senior manager for student services Hamdiah Sazali.
Hamdiah welcomed the new intakes and advised them to strive to excel in their studies in order to become quality human resource and competitive in the job market.
A series of talks and briefi ngs were held during the orientation week that emphasised the importance of Technical Vocational and Education Training ( TVET) in the development of the country’s workforce. The orientation week also exposes and educates the new intakes on career pathway awareness upon completion of their studies.
To date PPKS has trained more than 47, 595 skilled workers with industryrelevant knowledge and skills.
Latest tracer study conducted by PPKS Career Planning and Placement Department ( CCPD) indicates 65 per cent of employment within six months upon course completion, while 19 per cent secured employment after 6 months of course completion and 17 per cent went for further study.
PPKS is an industry- driven college and it has established collaboration and cooperation with 60 industry- oriented companies locally and internationally.
Among the new intake is a 22year- old construction company proprietor from Sibu, Muhamad Nur Arif Abdul Hamid who enrolled in Level 2 Mechanical Draughtsman. He hoped to acquire the industry-relevant certification and skills which would benefit him in his business.
Sharing the same sentiments, Mashniza Mahmud, 18-year- old SPM school leaver from SMK Sri Setia, said a strong sense of entrepreneurship has motivated her to take up technical education in fashion and tailoring offered at PPKS here. She is determined to set up her own fashion and tailoring boutique after fi nishing her course.
Meanwhile 18-year-old, Shahrul Ahmad from Kuching is a SPM holder from SMK Demak who enrolled for the Air- Conditioning course believing that technical education is essential to meet industry needs.
