RM350,000 worth of drugs seized; two suspects arrested
A Masters degree holder from Nigeria was arrested last week along with a local woman on suspicion of trafficking in nearly RM350,000 worth of drugs.
State Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) head Supt Sahar Abdul Latiff said the 28-year- old foreigner, who studies at a private higher learning institute here, was nabbed during a follow-up operation after his 25year- old female acquaintance was arrested earlier the same day.
“State NCID personnel detained the woman who works in the private sector in her office at Rock Road around 1.50pm on April 13.
“She was found in possession of a couriered box containing 962g of Syabu and 1,299 Ecstasy pills worth RM347,300,” he told a press conference at state police headquarters here yesterday.
Following her arrest, police moved quickly to detain the Nigerian at Jalan Satok around 4.50pm and seized a Perodua Kembara car registered under his name.
Sahar said initial investigation revealed the parcel sent to the woman from Kuala Lumpur had been concealed among clothing articles and inside food packaging.
“Based on information we have obtained, this is not the first time they have brought drugs into the state. They have done it a few times since the end of last year using the same modus operandi.
“We are now in the midst of expanding our probe and expect to make more arrests in connection with this case,” he said.
The Nigerian, he revealed further, was a Business student who had just graduated with a Masters degree, and had received an offer letter to pursue his PhD.
Both suspects are being remanded until April 21, with police classifying the case as drug trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, an offence which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
State NCID deputy head DSP Sekam Anoi and state NCID operations chief ASP Alpiyang Mohd Ali were with Sahar at the press conference.
