SIBU: Police have arrested 12 suspects, all in their 20’s, in connection with the murder of a 29-year-old businessman during a fight at Wong King Huo Road Lane 3B here last Thursday night.

Two of them were remanded for five days from yesterday while the rest would be released, pending police investigation.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Mazlan Mansor said police had also recovered several items that were related to the fight to assist in their investigation.

“The CCTV recording of the fight that went viral will also help us in our investigation into the case,” he added at the press conference after his official visit here yesterday afternoon.

In the incident, the victim was having a drink at a coffee shop with his friends when two men in their 20’s showed up.

An argument between him and one other man ensured before it heated up.

The argument is said to be over a misunderstanding in social media postings.

The suspect is believed to have called a group of about 10 men who were armed with wooden and iron objects.

They allegedly attacked the victim and his friends before the victim fainted and his friends suffered injuries in their attempt to stop the attack on the victim.

Mazlan brushed aside speculations that the fight involved criminal gangs, adding it was merely two groups of people fighting.

“Sibu is a peaceful town and there are no big issues. Nobody in Sibu should worry about this case as we are all very safe,” he added.

Mazlan also disclosed that more suspects could be roped in to assist police investigation into the case.

He said they should not try to run as there was no way for them to hide.

“Sarawak is not big and even if they go to China, we can cross the South China Sea to get them,” he warned.
