SIBU: Tanjung Manis will be a catalyst of development for the surrounding areas extending to as far as Sarikei.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said what was more important now was to improve the connectivity.
“The government has a plan to upgrade the coastal highway which also involves Tanjung Manis.
“When we improve connectivity, it will enable the hinterlands to be developed with Tanjung Manis as the nucleus because it is a natural port,” he said when officiating at ‘Pesta Belawai’ in Belawai yesterday. The fest runs from April 21 to 23.
On another subject, Awang Tengah said Rajang River would be dredged to enable large ships to enter and anchor at Tanjung Manis Port.
“It will assist in the development of the hinterland area and enable sustainable development in Tanjung Manis and the surrounding areas,” he said.
According to Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment, various programmess and courses would be conducted in Tanjung Manis in the future to guide the local people, especially the younger generation.
He said such programmes and courses were important to increase local involvement in business.
“Due to the enormous business potential in this area, we have the master plan not only for the expansion of Tanjung Manis township but also a plan for economic activities,” he said.
Assistant Minister for Workforce Development and Training Datu Len Talif Salleh, Tanjung Manis MP Datuk Norah Tun Abdul Rahman and Tanjung Manis District Officer Udin Bujang were also present at the function.
