Join farmers’ organisation to reap its benefits — Julaihi
SEBUYAU: Farmers in Samarahan division, including Sebuyau, are urged to join the Area Farmers’ Organisation (AFO) to reap its benefits.
Assistant Minister for Rural Economy (Coastal Areas) and Fisheries Datuk Julaihi Narawi said although there were many fishermen in the area, there were also some who cultivate their land for farming.
“It will be good if more farmers can join the organisation in order to benefit from the activities and profit from the organisation. I would like to urge more farmers to join as members,” he said on Friday at the presentation of a tithe at Dewan Pembangunan Sebuyau here.
A total of 100 members from the AFO received cash tithes of RM150 each, presented by Julaihi.
At the moment, the organisation has about 7,900 members comprising Malays, Iban, Chinese, Bugis and Javanese.
Julaihi, who is also Assistant Minister for Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) hoped that more such events could be held to help the deserving members.
Julaihi also urged locals to prepare themselves to reap the spin-off benefits from the various developments in the area like roads and bridges, adding that almost all villages in the area are now connected by roads.
He cited the completion of the Batang Sadong Bridge, which has enabled farmers and fishermen to market their produce more conveniently.
“Unlike in the past, when the mode of transportation was only by boat, we can now enjoy convenient road networks,” he said.
Meanwhile, Samarahan AFO chairman Merum Babu said membership is expected to exceed 8,000 due to the redelineation of the boundaries between Gedong, Simunjan and Sebuyau.
He added that a similar event will be held in Gedong and Simunjan, depending on the availability of funds from the Federal Farmers Organisation (NAFAS).
