MIRI: A magistrates’ court here yesterday charged an Indonesian man with murder and causing grievous hurt on two other men on April 15.

Kasim Katanni, 26, of Tondong, Sulawesi, Indonesia was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the murder of 45-year- old assistant project manager Yusuf Sidani Sampe.

The Section provides for a mandatory death sentence.

Kasim, who worked as a labourer at a plantation company, also faces two other charges of causing grievous hurt under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years in prison, or with a fine, or caning, or any two such punishments.

He allegedly used a knife on his fellow countrymen Markurius Robin and Peri.

Both offences were allegedly committed around 8pm on April 15 at a shop in Kampung Kayu Kapur, Bekenu.

The three charges were read separately to the accused and no plea was recorded.

Deputy Registrar Mohd Hafizi Abdul Halim set May 23 for further mention of the case after prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor applied for a new date for further mention pending the chemist and postmortem reports.

The accused, who was represented by counsel Ranbil Singh, was ordered to be further detained at the Miri Central Prison.
