MIRI: The Miri Occupational Safety and Health Practitioners’ Society ( MOSHPS) has noted the quality and recognition of Fajar International College’s ( FIC) Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health ( DipOSH).

MOSHPS chairman Dr Julian Jolly said aspiring occupational safety and health practitioners should choose a diploma programme that has gained official recognition from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health ( Dosh), so that they can register with the department as a safety and health officer ( SHO) in Malaysia.

Julian said to date Fajar’s DipOSH is the only programme in East Malaysia with recognition from Dosh and Malaysian Qualifications Agency ( MQA) accreditation.

As such, graduates can register as SHO with DOSH upon completion with three years of relevant working experience.

“It is imperative that present and prospective students take that into consideration because only graduates of occupational safety and health diplomas that are recognised and endorsed by Dosh can apply to register as safety health officers,” he said.

He explained that SHOs wishing to practise in Malaysia must receive Dosh’s approval, registration and, upon approval, Dosh will issue a safety passport known as the ‘Green Book’.

FIC’s diploma has also secured accreditation and official recognition from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, United Kingdom ( IOSHUK), confirming the international standard of its course content, which has been duly assessed and complies with global academic requirements on occupational safety and health.

Graduates of this diploma programme can provide the knowledge and leadership skills needed in industry that will assist in conserving life, health and property; improve productivity by implementing lost- control programmes; identify health and safety hazards in the work environment; and advise on corrective actions to be taken.

Occupational safety and health professionals play major roles in the development and applications of accident investigations, risk assessments, loss prevention, and safety training programmes for

workers.

In terms employment opportunities, DipOSH graduates are highly sought after by both the private and government sector.

In the private sector, they are in high demand in the various industries such as oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, plantations, and hospitality.

In the government sector, they can join any government agency or regulatory body where the safety and health of workers are of primary concern.

Many graduates are also employed as consultants and lecturers in the safety and health field.

Safety and health is a rapidly expanding field which provides graduates with demanding and growing employment opportunities.

For students wishing to continue their studies to degree level, FIC has a standing arrangement with Middlesex University, United Kingdom where students can complete their final year at the UK campus.
