SUPP leaders meet DID chief to address flash floods

KUCHING: Heavy rainfall early yesterday morning caused flash floods in a few low-lying residential areas here.

One of the residential areas affected by the flash floods was Happy Valley, Premier 101, where the water level rose to two feet, causing damage not only to properties and furniture inside the houses but also to vehicles.

More than 20 residents affected brought the incident to the attention of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party ( SUPP), prompting SUPP Batu Lintang chairman Sih Hua Tong, SUPP youth chief Tan Kai and publicity secretary Milton Foo to call on Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) director Chok Moi Soon to discuss short-term and long -term measures to address the flash floods.

During the meeting, Chok disclosed that the rainfall recorded from 3am to 4am yesterday was 84mm, the highest recorded so far.

He said other factors like major development projects and high tide could have also caused the flash floods.

‘For Happy Valley area, the flash flood was caused by the heavy rainfall and it is also because of the location as it is located in a low-lying area,” he said.

According to Tan Kai, government agencies like Civil Defence Force and the Resident’s Office were also brought to the scene to evaluate the situation for further action.

Meanwhile, Foo said their meeting with the DID and councillors from the local authority and engineers was to look for solutions to the problem.

“There is no point to finger point at others but what we are doing here is so that the facilities can be improved and solutions can be found to solve the matter.”
