KUCHING: Students of higher learning institutions are encouraged to undergo industrial training to prepare to enter the job market.

In making the call, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang said early exposure is critical to equip them with soft skills as in communication, building self- confidence, picking up communication technology (ICT) skills and presentation.

“Exposure is important, so students of higher learning institutions should go for industrial training with relevant industries before completing credit hours and graduating,” he said yesterday.

He said this at the launch of PPKS/i-CTAS career month 2017 at Tan Sri Aziz Multipurpose Hall, i- CATS West Campus at Jalan Stampin Timur here.

Nyabong said students need to be information technology ( IT) literate and adapt to challenges and change.

“ICT has become part and parcel of daily life, it has effect on how an organisations operate their businesses, so we must master IT knowledge,” he added.

Nyabong said the event marked a significant milestone in the effort to make opportunities in the job market more transparent to PPKS/i- CTAS graduates for them to secure jobs and think about their future.

He said Career Month, which involved engaging industry experts to share real-life experience, was a good initiative.

“Certainly, the needs of the industry and importance of academics under one roof can boost human capital development among students and graduates.”

Earlier, PPKS/i-CATS director of corporate services, Stanley Gona Chee Khiong said the month-long event included job fair, talks and workshops by representatives from government agencies and industry, and sharing sessions by the alumni.

Stanley said the event was among efforts by the institution to complement the government in developing intellectual capital.

As a registered training provider with the Human Resources Development Fund ( HTDF) and approved training provider for SME Corp Malaysia, PPKS/i- CATS conducts a wide range of training programmes for industries.
