Talk on waste management May 5

-

KUCHING: Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society ( MNS) Kuching Branch will be organising a talk on Waste Management on May 5.

The public awareness talk will be held at Citrus 1, fifth f loor, Limetree Hotel, Jalan Padungan Kuching. The public are encouraged to participate to have a better insight on waste management. Entrance to the event is free.

Tr ienekens , in a pr e s s statement, said disposal of solid waste is a major environmental concern in Sarawak. The types of waste include residential, industrial ( Samalaju Industrial Park), commercial, construction, demolition and wood waste from timber processing.

Presently about 2,187 metric tonnes per day of municipal wastes are collected and landfilled throughout Sarawak. There is no separation of waste at source but people can do it on a voluntary basis. There is a limited infrastructure for recycling.

Besides landfills, there are no less than 39 open dumps in Sarawak where solid wastes are collected and landfilled by local authorities. Some villagers who live outside the jurisdiction of the local authorities throw rubbish into the river causing water pollution.

In order to prevent and avoid waste, we can Reduce, Repair, Reuse and Recycle. Sarawak needs to turn waste into a valuable resource. We throw away a lot of food - organic waste form 40 per cent of the waste which can be recycled into fertilisers.

Meanwhile, MNS members are required to register with the secretariat at mnskuching@ gmail.com
