KUCHING: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a 42year- old man from Simunjan to 20 years in jail after he pleaded guilty to attempted murder three months ago.

Judge Timothy Finlayson Joel handed down the maximum penalty of the charge framed against Ulin Blukok under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code.

In passing the sentence, Timothy said a deterrent that reflected the seriousness of the offence must be given.

Despite surviving the tragedy, he said the victim sustained severe injuries and also lost his family members.

“As such, the sentence must reflect public interest and the safety of the public must be protected and no one should take the law in his own hands. No one is above the law.

“Though the accused pleaded guilty, I do not think that there would be any discount on him because the offence is serious,” he said.

DPP Yong Ann Nee had earlier urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the accused because Ulin had grievously hurt the victim by slashing him with

Ulin said nothing in mitigation and was observed smiling when he walked out of the dock following sentencing.

He admitted attempting to murder Hassan Abdullah, 36, on Jan 22 this year around 3.30pm at Kampung Tumu, Mile 10, Jalan Matang here.

Ulin is also facing two murder charges, pending trial, for causing the deaths of Mohd Joe Abdullah, Daud Abdullah, and Noraini Abdullah.

The three victims were killed in a fire – allegedly set by Ulin – which completely destroyed their house.

Murder, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
