Free movie screenings for the public at Aiffa 2017

KUCHING: The first day of the Asean Internatio­nal Film Festival and Awards (Aiffa) 2017 started off with free movie screenings at the Old Courthouse auditorium yesterday.

The movies shown were among the more than 100 entries for this year’s Aiffa.

The movies shown yesterday were Ziarah — Tales of the Otherworld ( Indonesia), followed with Imbisibol ( Philippine­s), Paglipay ( Philippine­s), Emma ( Indonesia), Upin & Ipin, Jeng, Jeng, Jeng (Malaysia), Interchang­e (Malaysia) and Volkswagen Kuning (Malaysia).

The first movie was shown at 10am and the last was screened at 8pm, with a 10 – to 15 – minute break in between each movie.

The first screening had a handful of viewers as yesterday was both a working and school day.

The movie screenings will be held until Saturday, with different movies shown each day.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah represente­d Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg to officiate at Aiffa’s opening at the amphitheat­re last night. The highlights of the night were scheduled to include appearance­s by comedian Phua Chu Kang, Upin and Ipin, singers Dayang Nurfaizah and Datuk David Arumugam of Alleycats.

Aside from that, the world’s longest rattan mat has been rolled out at the event launching venue to welcome guests from all over the world.

Guests coming to the event were invited to dress in cat costumes to celebrate the city of Kuching and to attempt a Guiness World Record from 5pm onwards.

Martial arts superstar Donnie Yen is scheduled to make an appearance at the event tomorrow (Saturday) from 2pm onwards at the Old Courthouse.

There are 16 categories in Aiffa which recognise the contributi­ons of directors, directors of photograph­y, actors, writers, and editors as well as for lifetime achievemen­ts and inspiratio­ns.
