MIRI: Taman Tunku residents affected by flash floods are calling on the relevant authorities to come up with a long-term solution for the problem.

We have been facing this problem for many years. Whenever it rains heavily, the overflowing rainwater from the drain would cause flash floods and it affects our households and property. Anyi, Taman Tunku resident

One resident, who only wished to be identified as Anyi from Jalan Daro, appealed to the authorities to improve the drainage system.

“We have been facing this problem for many years. Whenever it rains heavily, the overflowing rainwater from the drain would cause flash floods and it affects our households and property,” he said during a gathering of residents yesterday.

He said continuous rain from 8pm on Monday until 2am on Tuesday caused the worst flood to date.

“Before this, the water would rise up until our parking areas only but the recent one, which happened on Monday, was the worst. The water overflowed into our homes and damaged our sofas, carpets, cupboards including electrical appliances because most of the affected areas were single-storey houses.”

Another resident, who only wished to be identified as Ellice from Jalan Durin, said the flood left her sofa all wet and covered in mud.

“I have to throw away some of my cabinets as they were damaged, books and files that were also damaged have to be thrown away. I think it is going to take several days for the sofa to be dried entirely,” she said.

“If the drain issue is not fixed, then we would be flooded again. We want a stop to this problem.”

Concerned residents from Jalan Daro were seen carrying a banner to show their discontent during the gathering.

A check on the area found many residents still trying to clean up the mess left by the flash floods.
