-

MIRI: Despite the short notice, the Multi-faith Goodwill Walk touched the heart of over 60 people of various races including the Mayor of Miri City Adam Yii who walked as early at 6.30am to raise fund for the homeless and the indigenous people who are most affected by the fast depleting rainforests of Malaysia.

The event was organised by a local Sikh community leader Gurmukh Singh and United Sikhs committee member Karambir Singh.

The main organising team from # UNITEDSIKHS Malaysia Humanitarian Aid Organisation flew in from Kuala Lumpur on Friday. The team included Rishiwant Singh, Founder of Malaysia Foodbank Organisation accompanied by Malkeet Kaur and media partner Jesmesh Singh Jassal of *JesmeshStudio*.

The multifaith goodwill walk in Miri held in line with the slogan ‘ Seiring Sejalan Untuk Tabung Makanan Malaysia’ started and ended at the Gurdwara Sahib Miri Temple.

The first stop was at the St Columba Anglican Church where they were received by Right Reverend Bishop Solomon Cheong - Vicar of St Columba’s Parish and the Anglican Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kuching (Sarawak and Brunei) and from there they proceeded to the Masjid At-Taqwa where the walkers took a beautiful picture at the mosque.

The participants then walked to the Chinese Tua Pek Kong Temple where temple chairman Tay Choon Wei welcomed the group and served them with cakes and refreshment.

Rishiwant thanked all who made the event a success adding that the breakfast after the joyful 7 km city walk was sponsored by the Miri Punjabi Association .

“Upon completion of the walk at the Gurdwara Sahib Miri the walkers of all faiths and communities donated more than RM5,000 for the Malaysia Foodbank Organisation.

He said the goodwill walk which was born out of the need to feed the homeless and indigenous people of Malaysia was into its third year. The last goodwill walk in Miri was in 2014.

Since then the #WalktoFeed #WalkOfAllRaces for # MalaysiaFoodbank organised by # UNITEDSIKHS Malaysia Humanitarian Aid Organisation has walked almost 2,000 km Singapore to Melaka 2014, Perlis to Melaka 2015 and Mantin to Melaka 2016 and this year held mini walks all over towns, villages and cities throughout Malaysia.

Meanwhile Mayor Yii told The Borneo Post that the City Council welcomes such initiative to help the less fortunate.

“It is a very good initiative to help the poor and homeless in our society. Besides their ideas to visit the different places of worship show that charity transcends religions and races and this augurs well for multi-racial Malaysia,” he said.
