KUCHING: Newly- appointed Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has placed affordable housing as his top priority.

He said this was the policy of Chief Minister and former Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and therefore, it should be continued.

He believed that the construction of more affordable housing units would address the need of the ordinary people, especially young individuals and couples, for decent houses.

“That’s why I have set my sight on building affordable houses.

“I believe the majority of the people want affordable housing, which is has a price ranging from low to high,” he told reporters before a meeting with officers from the ministry at Wisma Sultan Tengah here yesterday.

Dr Sim, who is Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) president, said he would also be looking into the squatters issue so that every family in urban centres would have basic houses to stay in.

He said together with his Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee, they would do their best to meet the peoples’ aspiration for decent houses.

“I am very grateful to the chief minister for giving me this portfolio, which he has been holding for such a long time.

“Housing, as you know, is a very important ministry because there are so many issues that we need to address and this afternoon, I’m here to hear the issues from the officers in the ministry so that I can get these issues on the top agenda of our ministry,” he said.
