Cops nab 37 individual­s, seize cash and items in raids on gamblers

KUCHING: Police detained 37 persons including three women during 13 raids on gambling joints across the state last week ( May 1 to 7).

The police also confiscate­d cash amounting to RM5,934 during the raids.

State CID chief SAC Dato Dev Kumar said those arrested were found to be selling illegal fourdigit (4D) public lottery tickets, cyber gambling and taking part in illegal cock-fighting.

He said of the 13 raids, seven were for illegal 4D operations, seven individual­s were detained and cash amounting to RM1,259 was seized. Mobile phones, betting slips, portable printers, calculator­s and stationery were also seized.

“There were also raids against cyber gambling in Miri, Bintulu and Limbang which resulted in the arrest of 19 individual­s. Ten of those arrested were foreigners,” he said in a statement yesterday, adding that 61 computers used for cyber gambling and cash amounting to RM4,675 were seized from the counters in the gambling outlets.

Dev also said apart from illegal 4D operations and cyber gambling, the CID also swooped down on a cock-fighting pit in Beluru, Marudi which resulted in the arrest of 11 individual­s and the seizure of various parapherna­lia believed to be used for gambling, including eight live cocks and one dead cock.

The suspects are aged between 15 and 70.

All those arrested are being investigat­ed for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Ordinance 1962.

On the breakdown of all 37 raids, he said the teams from state CID headquarte­rs conducted three raids in Miri and Sarikei.

“CID Kuching, CID Miri and CID Bintulu carried out two raids each, while CID Serian, CID Bau, CID Limbang and CID Marudi conducted one raid each,” he said.
