MRC Kuching adopts three newborns
KUCHING: Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) Kuching District yesterday adopted three babies in conjunction with the World Red Cross / World Red Crescent Day Celebration.
The adoption is a tradition long practised by MRC Kuching District in conjunction with the celebration, said its chairman Datuk Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zain yesterday.
This year, three newborns — one boy and two girls born between 12am and 1am—will receive special attention from MRC Kuching District.
While Dr Abang Abdul Rauf did not specify what this entails, he did say that the society will be following up on their development.
He was speaking to reporters at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) shortly before handing over gift hampers to the mothers of the three babies.
He also called upon community workers to stay close to the grassroots and for nongovernmental organisations ( NGOs) to work together to send a message that the family institution is vital for a healthy society.
“Sometimes, when we go searching for material success, we forget about the family institution,” he said.
All three babies are the second child for their respective families.
Pollymena Ahngge from Kapit gave birth to a 2.1kg boy prematurely via caesarean section at 12.11am.
Pollymena, who attended the simple ceremony in a wheelchair and without her son, explained to reporters that the baby developed some issues and had to be delivered without further ado.
Anna Janggi from Betong delivered a 2.6kg baby girl at 12.20am. While she was not sure what this adoption meant for them, it was a pleasant surprise and the first time anything like this has ever happened to them.
When asked how she felt, Norfazilla Samsimon laughed and said she was tired and sleepy.
“I was supposed to get discharged already but I was asked to stay a little longer to attend this event. This is my second child and she’s 3.1kg.”
Present were MRC Kuching District honorary secretary Ng Liang Yew, who is also organising chairman of World Red Cross/ World Red Crescent Day Celebration.
Also present were MRC Nursing Superintendant Emmalice Jaboh and MRC officer in charge of youth Andrew Ang.
A group of MRC members also handed out gifts to patients in the maternity and children’s wards.
