KUCHING: Pakatan Harapan Sarawak Youth has lauded the appointment of Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah as Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

In congratulating Abdul Karim on his promotion and appointment, Pakatan Harapan Sarawak Youth commented: “His (Abdul Karim’s) appointment we believe is a good step to better working relationship with the government especially with regards to matters on youth and sports in the State.”

“This appointment also comes after the calls of Pakatan Harapan Youth Sarawak in our ‘Manifesto Anak Muda Sarawak’ which was announced three weeks ago for reforms to happen in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Solidarity Sarawak, which includes an appointment of a younger minister who will be able to relate better with the needs and demands of the younger generation in Sarawak,” Pakatan Harapan Sarawak Youth said in a press statement yesterday.

The press statement was jointly issued by Pakatan Harapan Youth Sarawak through PKR Youth representative Saifunnizam Sam, DAP Socialist Youth representative Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen and Amanah Youth representative Mohamad Fadillah Sabali.

They, however, hoped that Abdul Karim would address some of the pressing issues affecting youths in Sarawak especially with regards to creation of new jobs, addressing affordable housing for the youths, free public tertiary education and greater education autonomy in the state as well as providing more facilities and programmes to further enhance the standard of sports in the State.

“We also urge Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to have more dialogues with youth members of the State regardless of political divide and affiliation to better understand the needs and allow greater participation of youth in policies that will affect us all as a whole.”

Pakatan Harapan Sarawak Youth said for far too long the youths have been made mere spectators in the world of politics, adding that the voice of the Youths shall not just be heard, but also a guiding influence in the formation of policies.

“Thus, we strongly hope that the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports and the government of the day will rise above partisan politics and play their role to empower more young people in the State so that we can take up greater role in determining the direction of our country.

“With that we look forward for greater working relationship as we all play our part for the betterment of the State. Once again we offer our heartiest congratulations to the new Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.”
