-

KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat yesterday morning handed over immediate cash assistance amounting to RM3,500 to the fire victims of Rumah Messop, Ulu Sungai Entanggai, Melipis, here.

Tuai Rumah Messop Tawi received the cash on behalf of his people from Jamit in a simple ceremony witnessed by Kapit district officer Elvis Didit, who is the chairman of Kapit District Disaster Relief Committee, and deputy Tuai Rumah Pangang Lingga at the PBB Bukit Goram Service Centre here.

A total of 104 people from 17 families were left homeless when fire razed their single- storey wooden longhouse at around 4pm last Saturday. Losses are estimated at RM1.36 million

Each family will receive RM200 and the balance of RM100 is to cover the cost of transportation for Messop and Pangang to the town.

Jamit said he was very happy with the swift action taken by the various government departments and Malaysian Red Crescent and Lions Club Kapit to assist the fire victims.

The next thing he would do, he added, is to discuss with Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi on how best to help the fire victims,

Meanwhile, Elvis informed that he had directed officers from National Registration Department (JPN) to re-register the victims on Thursday.

“I was told they lost everything in the fire. I don’t want them to come up to Kapit to apply for their personal documents. It’s costly and inconvenient. I want JPN to visit the fire victims to record their particulars for registration of personal documents,” said Elvis.

Yesterday morning, Malaysian Red Crescent Kapit Chapter and Lions Club Kapit were making arrangement to transport blankets, clothes and food to the fire victims through the Welfare Department office in Kapit.
