BINTULU: The Institute of Materials Malaysia ( IMM) will take proactive measures towards encouraging more local youths to enrol into various technical and high-technology programmes, particularly those related to the oil and gas (O& G) industry.

According to IMM president Mohd Azmi Mohd Noor, as a non- governmental organisation (NGO) that has been operating in the country for the past 30 years, IMM is on the right track in helping the government promote the O& G industry, particularly the operations here.

“Most importantly, IMM plays an important role in helping more local youths to participate in this (O& G) industry, for them to achieve better standard of living in the future,” he said at a conference on ‘Facility Integrity and Maintenance’ at a hotel here recently.

The IMM membership is open to any individual who is interested in materials technology, added Mohd Azmi.

“At the same time, IMM also assists in training and producing more local engineers. I hope that through this workshop, the participants would be able to produce ideas slated for helping people from the rural areas to be more involved in the O& G industry.”

Mohd Azmi said all these programmes would need help and support from various parties to ensure that IMM could move even further towards strengthening the industry. The conference was also attended by IMM Bintulu Chapter chairman Raymond Phen.
