Soon Koh chairs first meeting on e-commerce

KUCHING: Minister of International Trade and ECommerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh yesterday chaired the first meeting to gain better understanding on e- commerce so as to deliberate development plans for the industry.

Assistant Minister for E- Commerce Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais and permanent secretary to the ministry Kamri Affendi as well as key leaders from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and Malaysian Investment Development Authority ( MIDA) were among those present.

At the meeting, Wong said his ministry was entirely new in the state cabinet and while this was a challenge to him, he had trust in his team to help deliver the results expected by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He was confident that Sarawak would set up an independent platform for the development of e- commerce under the able leadership of Abang Johari.

Wong noted that the Chief Minister had taken proactive steps such as announcing the state’s focus on the digital economy to keep Sarawak on par with the rest of the world.

He said the new ministry would see increasing responsibility as the state moved towards the development of the digital economy.

“It will be a very challenging task for Sarawak. It is also something that the younger generation should look forward to.”

He said the state government would not mind working with the federal government which had launched its e- commerce blueprint last year.

He added that any development project could be accomplished through the 3P initiative, comprising public, private and people.

Wong hoped the e- commerce development in the state would open up more opportunities for the young people of Sarawak to enable them to market local products in the global arena.
