TYT: State to continue emphasis on downstream activities
KUCHING: The state government will continue to emphasise on the development of downstream industries which are value-added and of high technology, said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
By setting up Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy ( SCORE), he added, the state government had successfully attracted many industries which manufacture basic products that serve as components or input that can appeal to high-value downstream industries.
“I am confident that the existing industries in Samalaju Industrial Park will be able to develop their respective clusters with more downstream industries invited to invest in the state,” he said in his address at the opening of the First Session of the Second Term of the 18th State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) sitting at DUN Complex here yesterday.
The Head of State also noted that the rapid development of technology and research had led to drastic changes in the development of industries worldwide.
“We must move in line with the development of the global industry to ensure that Sarawak continues to attract large-scale investments in high-tech industries,” he emphasised.
On tourism, Taib deemed it a crucial sector for Sarawak considering that it is one of the major contributors to the state’s economy in addition to creating business and job opportunities for the people.
“Efforts ought to be continued to develop the tourism sector in terms of infrastructure, tourism and human capital.
“At the same time, promoting Sarawak as an attractive tourist destination of the world must also be intensified,” he advised.
