Saratok candidate hopeful actively moving on the ground

KUCHING: Businessman Subeng Mula held a dialogue at Rumah Ampi, Bajau Asal, Saratok last Saturday as he continued lobbying to be nominated as a Barisan Nasional ( BN) candidate.

A crowd of more than 500 people including those from other longhouses filled up the ‘ ruai’ (veranda) of Rumah Ampi to meet Subeng in person and to hear his vision and mission for Saratok parliamentary constituency.

Longhouses in Bajau Asal come under Krian, one of three state seats under Saratok, and past election results have indicated Bajau Asal as a tough area for BN to win over.

Subeng was introduced as a local Saratok boy with strong connections to BN leaders by speakers at the function.

Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party ( SPDP) Krian youth chief Jeffry Jimbun said the 53-year- old Subeng has the right personality and qualification to carry the BN flag in Saratok.

He also believed Subeng’s years of experience in corporate management and administration will come in handy in executing tasks as an elected representative.

“The presence of Subeng in the Saratok political arena for the coming general election cannot be taken lightly.

“In order to generate positive perception towards BN and SPDP, we need people like Subeng whose qualities and strengths can attract the younger voters,” said Jeffry.

SPDP grassroots leaders including Awik Ulu unit chief Bennett Buan and Brayang unit chief Supol Geringu also recommended Subeng to be the BN candidate for Saratok, in the hope that he can accelerate development, which has stalled in Krian, if he wins the seat.

Meanwhile, Parti Rakyat Sarawak ( PRS) Krian division chief Insol Untang is also hopeful that Subeng will be nominated as the BN candidate.

“I am impressed with his personality. He is approachable and willing to share his ideas and knowledge,” said Insol.

Subeng claimed to have the support of SPDP’s leadership to lobby for the candidacy.

He also told the gathering that he had been assisted by members of SPDP Krian, Kalaka and Kabong divisions in organising dialogues and programmes in the constituency.

He pledged to facilitate more development at the Bajau Asal area, which is located under the opposition-held Krian seat. Krian, together with Kalaka and

Kabong make up the Saratok parliamentary constituency.

“It is certainly not an easy task to be the people’s elected representative, but I do hope the people of Saratok will give me their blessing so that I get the chance to realise my mission and vision for Saratok,” he said.

The function also saw Subeng handing over some contributions to the longhouse committee for the coming Gawai celebration.

Subeng has been actively moving on the ground with visits to longhouses and villages in Saratok since last year.

Prior to the function at Bajau Asal, he had a gathering in Simpang Saratok which was attended by close friends and members of his working committee to foster closer rapport and exchange ideas.

He is among several people lobbying to be the BN candidate, due to speculations that partyless BN-friendly Saratok MP Tan Sri William Mawan may be replaced.

Meanwhile, Subeng also gave personal contributions to the family of the late Abang Madehan Abang Awi of Kampung Paloh, Kabong on Monday.

The late Abang Madehan drowned after the boat he was in capsized in waters not far from Kabong.

The contributions were handed over by Subeng’s representative, his older brother Wat Sedin.
